Why You Should Trash the Dress on Your Hawaiian Honeymoon

Updated: May 22, 2022

Okay, so you are looking for things on your Hawaii honeymoon. As a Maui elopement photographer and surrounding islands, I have to say that one of my favorite suggestion is to schedule a “trash the dress” photography session.

So what is a “trash the dress” session like exactly?

These sessions are incredibly playful and exhilarating. This is a photoshoot where newlywed couples opt to wear their original wedding attire while doing unconventional activities, like playing in the ocean, hiking, paint fights, smoke bombs, perhaps even rolling around in the dirt, bungee jumping, you name it!

There is something about exilarating about slightly destroying your wedding dress that always come out radiating with joy and romance in an absolutely candid and brilliant way.

I don't know about you but after planning your wedding and the stress that comes with it....Trashing the dress kinda feels like a "F" you to all that previous unwanted stress in a fun and spontaneous way. Like your starting your life, how you want it, with who want to it, and without care in the world!

There is a pure child-like fun that is brought out in newly weds when you tell them to get in the ocean in their nice clothes. The visual contrast between dress clothes and the wildness of the ocean is always striking. There is also an intense intimacy created when it's just two people and the ocean.

Running along the shoreline is the perfect compromise if you are not 100% percent sure about trashing the dress. A little wetness won't hurt.

Maui Wedding Gown Pressing is great option to take care of your wedding dress post after your trash the dress photoshoot. On their website they offer to "...the cleaning, preservation and delivery of your wedding gown safely back to your home. Cleaning your gown ensures it is quickly revised from the Maui elements and eliminates the need to travel with it in your luggage."

Wrecking your wedding dress photoshoots work for all couples. If you are eloping, perfect! Honeymooning? Just remember to pack the dress! Celebrating a wedding anniversary? Pull the dress out of its box in the back of the closet.

If you aren’t looking to subject your wedding dress and/or suit to the elements in this way, I still suggest getting in the water with an alternate set of elegant outfits. If you are looking for alternative local brands for your photoshoot you can find a list of some of my favorite Hawaiian based clothing companies HERE.

Hands-down, this is a must on your Hawaii honeymoon. Not only is it an experience you will remember forever, the images will absolutely delight your friends and family.
